Default 95 Ram 2500 won't stay in overdrive ..??

95 Ram 2500 5.9L 6cyl Cummins

Hi- My transmission just started slipping out of overdrive and keeps bouncing through the gears when I get to 50-60mph. Some days it runs fine. Some days it will randomly shift through the gears every 30 seconds or so. "Trans Temp" dummy light on the dash comes on when it starts acting up but goes out when it finds the right gear for the the vehicle speed / load.
I noticed it happens more often while going up / down hills on the interstate.

-Tried 2 bottles Lucas Trans Fluid fix - no change
-Tried filling / removing fluid to different levels on the dipstick - no change
(measured while engine running and fuid warm)
-Trans was rebuilt less than a year ago
-Replaced the Throttle Position Sensor today - no change

any ideas ?
Thank You

Get your batteries tested individually, and make sure the terminals are clean and tight. Are you checking the fluid with the trans in neutral? Are all grounds connected?

batteries / terminals / alternator are all brand new....both batts are grounded. I've tried running it with plus or minus two quarts to see what happens but no difference. I'll try checking the dipstick in Nuetral tomorrow and see if its in the same ballpark and post results.
Thanks

You have to have the trans hot and in N to check the proper fluid level not just warm, also are you using AFT+4 that is the proper fluid to use, do not use ATF+3 or Dextron. Oh how does the fluid smell burnt, what color is the trans fluid dark red or cherry red?

Are you 100% sure its the overdrive cycling and not the torque converter clutch?

ATF 3 is perfectly fine, you just have to flush it 3x as often.

(Sorry for delay... was gone a couple weeks)

Fluid level is good ( in neutral / on level ground / hot )

I put in a new filter yesterday and drove it 40 miles with no problems.

Turned around to come home and, after 20 miles, it started jerking through the gears and won't stay in overdrive more than a few seconds.

Maybe electrical ? I had headlights and heater on during the return trip.

I have had problems with my tranny slipping out of overdrive and sometimes other gears. I changed the tranny oil/filter, it fixed the problem for a couple days. This morning, it started slipping again so when I got to work I noticed the battery cables were loose. I cleaned them up and tightened them then took it for a test drive.. The truck runs and shifts like a champ!

Hope this helps someone.

It turns out the culprit was the Transmission Oil Heat sensor....if this is malfunctioning or there is a loose wire, the trans won't go into overdrive or will cause it to shift sporadically. Easy fix; it's on the trans fluid line near the pan.
