Exclamation Transfer Case Help!

I have an 04 Dodge Ram 3500 Auto Tran 5.9 Litre 4WD Laramie Crew Cab truck that the transfer case "blew up", and we are needing to replace the transfer case as well as what I believe is called the "tail housing", my problem is that we're missing the piece that has the part number for the transfer case, and I've done some research and have found that there are 2 model numbers, 271 and 273. My question is what is the easiest way to either track the part number down, or is there a difference between the 271 and 273? I'm at about wits end trying to get this pinned down and to know exactly what I need to get to fix my truck!

I'm not sure about the difference in transfer case but the best way to get a part number would be to call your local dealership parts department and tell them your looking for a price on a transfer case and ask them for the part number. Give them your vin code and they should be able to identify which one it is.

Then check your local wrecking yard for a price on a used one

The truck is a combination of mine and my fiancee's, he said that we might even need the stamp number, so so far there are 4 different numbers, model numbers, part numbers, stock numbers, and stamp numbers. He's not sure what we will need. Unfortunately we don't have a local dealership or part store, but I do have the customer service number for dodge that I will call monday but thank you very much!

PM me the last 8 digits of your VIN and I should be able to help get the info you need.

According to the VIN, your truck left the factory with a 273. The original part number is 52105650AC but you can interchange the "AC" at the end with AD or AE. If you get one from a dealer the tail housing will come with it. If you need the tail housing (transfer case extension) part number it is 5086340AA. Hope this helps.
