05 cummins keeps cracking injectors
I have a 05 5.9 cummins that has around 92000 miles on it and i the last month in a half it has cracked 3 injectors. First i cracked the front injector then a month later the 4th injector then the same day i picked it up from la crosse diesel i didnt even make it home. Everytime it puts fuel into the crankcase. i pulled the valve cover and disconnected the injector pump to raise the rail pressure to see which injector and found that i was the 6th injector the last time. all i have done to the truck is a 40hp dr performance chip and a straight pipe. la crosse diesel said that if the rail pressure was high it would throw a code and it didnt. whats causing this cant afford to keep putting a new one in every time it happens. i am gonna replace the other 4 injectors that havent been yet but i dont want it to happen again.
Welcome to DF!
Yep, cracked injectors happen more frequently with raised rail pressure. I would ditch the Dr Performance for a while and see what happens. IDK if that modifies rail pressure readings or not. Also, when was the last time your fuel filter was changed? What filter are you currently using?

sorry havent checked updates for awhile. i plan on ditching the chip but would a bad fuel filter really cause my truck to crack injectors? the chip i had in my truck for a year so i didnt think that would cause it but didnt want to chance it. the filter as far as i know is prolly the factory filter. i bought the truck a year ago with 78,000 mile on it and now have 92,000 on it. what would be a good filter? and one more question what would be a good chip to get i have been told that bully dog gt is prolly the best way to go but idk. thanks for the reply
Take the Dr. P off. I'm not saying that's your root cause, but it could be a factor.
Replace injectors as a set, instead of piece by piece. That's my opinion; I'll never replace just one, it's all 6. You can then sell the good ones and possibly the bad one(s) as core. If you can, send your CP3 off to be checked, make sure it's in good working order and clean. I'd flush the rail and lines, in case there's something in there. Finally, when it goes back together, new fuel filter. If you can, try an AirDog or FASS or a filter unit like those from GDP (http://www.glacierdieselpower.com/de...dept_id=08-002) would be a good idea.
There is absolutely NO reason it should crack injectors that much, either something is wrong in your fuel system or the place doing the repairs just sucks that bad.

Change the filter and replace with a Baldwin PF7977 if you can find one or at this point anything from any auto store will do, but get that filter out ASAP. Also, when you do drain the housing on the filter, you can use about 2ft of 3/4 tubing from the outlet hose to a jar or bucket to keep from making a mess, i would reccomend that, plus if you catch the drained fuel, you can check it for water contamination. Id be interested in seeing a pic of your old filter if you can.
Alot of people run Smarty or Edge for tuners.
You mean fuel in crankcase? Change the oil too, limit as many potential causes of any type of failure as you can.
