Default 97 5.9 starting/idling issues

engine normally starts really well with no pedal at all. Lately, it needs a touch of pedal or it wont fire at all. Once it is running, sometimes it idles too slow, and sometimes it dies. The idling problem is inconsistent, but the starting problem is constant.

If I shut it off hot, and immediately restart it, everything is great, no pedal required. But shut it off for 30 minutes, and problem is back, needs pedal.

where to start?

btw, I've already adjusted the throttle linkage once to help starting issues. It idles plenty fast as it is, so adjusting the throttle linkage anymore isn't what I want to do.
