Need help! 04 3500 ram, turns off while driving? Fuel problems ? No idea!

Default Need help! 04 3500 ram, turns off while driving? Fuel problems ? No idea!

The story is I traveled 4 hours last night when I got off the freeway at home the truck just quit running so i started it back up it turned over a while then eventually fired! So I went and put new fuel in it because it needed it after driving and I was thinking maybe it had some bad fuel. So while fueling it shut off again, so get it fired back up finally. Start heading home again and it quits while driving a handful of times. Finally it just won't fire up it turns over good but won't fire? So with only 3 miles to go I had to wait two hours to get it towed home! So any ideas? I was thinking fuel pump, or something electrical? Any ideas would be great thanks for the help!

Any codes?

Put your key in the ignition, and within about 5 seconds turn it to ON (don't start) then OFF, ON, OFF, ON and leave it there. Watch the window for the odometer and it will read out any codes. Write them down.

If there are no codes it will say "done"

I did that and got p0633 and p0628? I guess I'll look those up and see what it is. Thanks for help!

The 0633 is a skim key code, try clearing it and see if it comes back

The 0628 is low voltage at the lift pump. Lift pump may be done or on it's way there

When it doesn't fire, does your instrument cluster work? Airbag light on?


Sounds like you've got a voltage issue. Test both of your batteries (load test them, disconnected).

The reason I ask about the other items is that I just fixed a Jeep that had a dead instrument cluster, airbag light on, and after I started diagnosing the thing it wouldn't start.

On the Jeep, the security key module, airbag module, PCM/TCM, instrument cluster, overhead console module, compass, and keyless entry module are all on the system bus, and if one of those gets an internal short and back-feeds voltage to the bus, you'll get all kinds of issues with all of those modules.

On that jeep, it was a bad keyless receiver module was the culprit. The quick and dirty test was to turn the key on, and then check voltage on pins 3 and 11 of the DLC. It should have been 2.5 volts, but it was reading 9.7+



It very well could be a failing lift pump, but with the other code as well I'd start looking at some more things.
