Default 5.9 gas to 5.9 Cummins Swap

Ok,
Pretty new here, and I've read alot of post. Thanks to all the folks that are willing to share some good knowledge. I belive I have found a new home for myself and my 2000 dodge Ram 2500 4x4 flame red baby! I have been tossing the idea around of changing it over from gas to diesel.... I was wondering if the tranny I have if it should bolt right up? The best place to find an older cummins and rebuild? And exactly wth it all takes to do it right? So your thoughts and comments are greatly appreciated. (Details MY truck has a 5.9 gas, it's a automatic tranny, 3/4 ton model.

Ok if you are looking at doing a swap I would find an older set up from a first gen 12 valve with correct trans or I would try ats and tell them what u are wanting to do with her pull, work, race they helped me out it and the only problem I face with my 12v now is the injector pump but I'll talk to a few people and see what we can figure out that might be good for you

1st gen would be 89-93 yr model 12valve if I am correct. What do you mean by "ats"? I'm not looking to race, or really pull much. Maybe a boat or what not, just would prefer lil red to be a diesel....more torque, and all around power. I've been watching Craigs List looking for an older wrecked dodge to maybe get all the parts but not really any luck. They all want 2k+. Think next month I'm going to go down to a public auction and start watching. They run it public on the 1st tues of each month I hear.

your transmission, xfer case, and rear end don't stand a chance of holding up to a cummins. get that idea out of your head right now...

get a built 47RE auto, an NP241HD transfer case, and a dana 80 rear end. (at the very least a dana 70.. dana 60 would explode if you sneezed...)

12v from either a 1st or 2nd gen will be the easiest swaps.

you will also need the diesel front springs for your truck due to the extra weight of the engine...The entire fuel system needs a swap too. that's fuel lines, and tank...you can get away with getting an aftermarket fuel system and delete the feed line, but replace the return line for the factory fuel system when used with an aftermarket system.

cheapest way to do the swap is going to be finding a donor truck...find a wrecked truck with all of the parts you need..

im Gonna be doing this same swap in a few months. I have a 97 5.9 gas 4x4 5 spd 2500 and a 97 Cummins 2wd 5 spd 3500 and I'm gonna be swapping the Cummins into the 2500. I'm gonna rebuild my trans for a Cummins. It's already got a 241dhd transfercase in it. But I'm just gonna swap everything.over when I get my orders To my next duty station.. so it really depends on what your truck has currently for parts. I'll be doing a build thread when.I am finally able to start the project..

Default 5.9 gas to 5.9 Cummins Swap

ok so i know its been a while since i been on here but i am finally gonna get started with this. instead of moving the motor and such to the 2500 frame im gonna put 4x4 into my 3500 which is a 2wd.

im gonna cut the front section of frame off both trucks. our frames were made in 3 pieces and there is a welded joint under the seats. im gonna grind off the welds at that joint and put the gas frame under the diesel truck and weld it back together.
