Looking at an 06' 5.9
Hey guys,
I'm looking at replacing my 08' 2500 hemi with a 3500 Cummins. I tow often and the Hemi just isn't cutting it. The local dealership has a 2006 5.9 mega cab Laramie on the lot for 26k with about 90k miles. Very clean truck and great service record history, appears to have been very well cared for. Also has the 4 speed auto trans. How are the auto trans in these trucks? Also, what are some things look out for?

The 48re isn't as good as the 68rfe behind the 6.7, but the 6.7's emissions crap is a buzz kill.
If you tow heavy, often, I'd seriously consider throwing a billet torque converter in, and having the trans gone through by someone good with the 727 based trannies.
Long story short, if the truck is as clean as you think it is, get it, and plan on fixing the weak link.

Well the only thing positive that came out of the test drive was the fact that the 5.9 could get almost 22 mpg at 70 mph. Decided to pass on it. Just lots of little things that were wrong with it which the test drive revealed.
