2006 Dodge Ram 6.7 Diesel Turns off while driving

I have less than 50,000 miles on this truck. I was driving 75 mph on the highway then all of a sudden the instrument panel surged the truck sputtered and it drove fine. Then 10 seconds later it did it again and the engine turned off. I still had electrical power to the instrument panel, radio, and lights but no power steering, brakes, or a running motor. I rolled to a stop. Placed it in park and restarted it. It started just fine. Got back on the highway and it did it again less than 500 yds down the road and has been doing it over and over again. It starts and idles just fine. Finally got it to the dealer and they were clueless about what I was explaining to them. They changed the fuel filter, oil and crank case filter. Picked it up today and approximately 10 miles later....it's doing it again. I did manage to get a video of it this time. If anybody else is having this problem with their truck and has had the problem fixed, please feel free to let me know what your solution was.

Is it a 2006, or a 6.7?

What do you mean the instrument cluster was surging?

First thing I'd do is disconnect both batteries, load test them individually, and check all of your positive and negative battery cables for good, clean connections. Then I'd bench test the alternator to make sure it's not putting out wacky voltage spikes.

It was a wire harness (starter harness or something like that) that ran over the top of the drive shaft. After a while of rubbing on the metal it caused it to fray (outer plastic covering was torn off) and short out. It's a 2006 6.7 liter Turbo Deisel 4x4 dark red mega cab with new tires, batteries, fuel filter, crank case filter. It has a little mud on it from hunting which is what probably caused the wire to fray due to riding down bumpy dirt roads and such. Apparently this has been a issue with other trucks of this generation but for some reason a recall hasn't been done for it. What I meant by surge is exactly what the word means. The speedometer and RPM gauge would shoot all the way up to the max speed/RPM (surge) even though the engine died. Anyways, hopefully somebody else will be able to use this information if it happens to them. Don't let the dealership dupe you into thinking it's something else. At one point they tried to tell me that it was doing it because there was "too much oil in it". Weird, I checked the oil and it was at the appropriate level. Anything to make a dollar now days.

When was the truck built? In 2006 the only Cummins diesel offered by dodge was the 5.9. It wasn't until 1/1/2007 that the 6.7 came out, as late 2007 model year.

Horatio is correct, Dodge did not put a 6.7 in their trucks till the 2007 model year.

My bad. I bought the 07 in 06. No wonder you were confused.

EPA mandate for the changeover in emissions was 1/1/07, but apparently Dodge started selling them in 11/06. News to me. I thought 1/07 was the earliest they were available.

It's considered an 07.5 model year, since it was a mid-year production change.

It's odd that the harness was anywhere near your driveshaft though. I don't recall my 08 having anything close.

6.7's didn't start to appear on lots until March 07. I remember very well because I had just put on my Smarty the day before a new 6.7 showed up at the lot, and had it not been for the programmer I may have traded. And I bought my Smarty in late Feb. and got it early March.

And I bought my 07 on Nov. 19, 2006. It was the third 07 the dealer had sold; all three came in on the same transport.

That's what I thought, but found someone else who said they got theirs in 11/06.
