Exclamation Is this turbo going to be giving me problems?

Going to buy a 99 24v this weekend.

Just kinda need some advice here.

It has 247k Miles, 90k on rebuilt tranny (bought that way, he said he tore it apart to make sure and it had billet body and borg warner internals) so hopefully I can take his word.
-VP44
-Stock injectors
-Stock turbo(silencer ring removed)
-Airdog 150
-4inch mbrp turbo back, 8 inch tip
- leveling kit
-edge comp
-new fluids last month, belt, tensioner, fuel filter, and water separator.

He said that could defiantly use a bigger turbo because it spools really fast and damn near turbo barks every time he gets on it. Seems normal to me? with the mods he has so far at least.

I'm just curious. I don't really have time atm to search the forums and I'm sorry for not, but I'm looking for fast advice. Will search if I get time and update this thread accordingly.

you don't need a new turbo. put a boost elbow on there if it does not already have one so you can hit 35psi boost.

other than that, you are not modded enough to need a new turbo until you put aftermarket injectors in it...

Alright thankyou. I seen a nice elbow on http://www.thoroughbreddiesel.com/

Also curious on if I do get AM injectors should I get new nozzles or the whole package since it has 250k?

Thankyou for the reply jiga. this will be my first cummins so i'm happy to hopefully be joining the forum.

or how big of size with holding a stock turbo should I go? A couple people told me 50-75hp.

This guy only had a fuel pressure gauge, so gauges will be my first mod.

any boost elbow will do...its just a little orifice with a hole and hex screw in it.

hooks to the boost hose on the turbo that controls the wastegate.

if you want injectors I would go with complete injectors, not just tips.

tips require you to get your injectors pop tested. complete injectors from a reputable injector builder are often modified beyond just tips...they will also modify the pintle, body, and pop pressures and have everything flow matched with corrected spray angles and such.

two of the best injector builders around are Weston (smokem on compd) and Chris from DFI.

what is your goal hp and what do you use the truck for?

that will determine what mods you should do...

btw my next set of injectors will be DFI 7x.011 SAC injectors with 151* spray angle, 300Bar pop pressure (approx 175HP injectors)

Alright, thanks for the information on the elbow. also on the information on the injectors. The details are a bit confusing but i'm doing research now to totally understand the concept. I was hoping to go 75hp with the stock turbo if tuned right. I think I read somewhere that, that is possible.

My goal HP is 500. I will be using the truck to pull a bobcat on a trailer for work and also hauling in the bed (dirt, rock, etc) and also will be just a new project. I have built several jeeps and this is going to be something new for me and I'm very excited. So it will be my DD too.

75hp injectors are not going to get you to 500hp...

best build for that would be a built transmission, then some head studs, 7x.010 SAC injectors, and a budget twin kit with a S472 under your stock turbo. also your stock turbo will need some cross drilling in the divider (where the turbine bolts to the manifold) and wastegate mods...

should net you 500hp range as well as quick spoolup and very tame street manners with the ability to tow anything without staring constantly at your pyrometer.

Okay, loved the information and noted it for future reference, but I did some further research and I was thinking about maybe playing with 300-350HP. To get started and maintain myself before I jump off to a big gain. That stock turbo drilling can still be done though correct? I was looking into headstuds as well, a few friends referenced me to those.

head studs are always a good idea.

and yes you can drill the turbine divider now if you desire...the point of it is to allow the turbo to gate all cylinders rather than just 3 of them...

the divider separates the gate from the output of the front 3 cylinders so those cylinders will still be driving the turbo even with the gate open...
