2006 injectors question
Hey everyone. I stopped at the local dealership and asked about my truck which seems to be down on power lately. It doesn't have that sit you back in the seat torque I remember it having. It also doesn't blow much black smoke if any at all when you jump on it. The truck is bone stock with 90K miles.
Anyway, the service manager said it's showing signs of injector failure and they they need replaced. My question is, can you tell that just by driving it? They want about $4K to replace them with reman injectors. The only other symptom I can think it shows besides lack of power is a ticking noise during low throttle usage. Kinda hard to tell for sure though, it's a noisy engine.

it shouldn't blow black smoke at all unless you have modified the fueling in some way...
injectors are very spendy for common rail trucks...I can replace my injection pump 4 times for the injector replacement cost you just quoted..
hell I can replace my injectors, injection pump, and lift pump combined twice for the cost of your injector replacement
I would say it is time to look at aftermarket injectors if you need to replace them...
failed injectors are nothing to ignore if indeed one or more are cracking their tips...
if the tip completely cracks and breaks it will cost you an engine rebuild and new pistons.
I would get a second opinion on the injectors though...lack of power is not a typical failed injector symptom... usually over fueling and constant smoke are signs of a failed injector. however the tick could say otherwise.
either way don't let the dealer do the injectors...
you can get reman injectors for $2400, then you would just need to install them and send in your cores.

I pulled the truck into the garage tonight after work and I cannot hear the tick under the hood like I can in the cab. Even had the wife raise rpm a little to try to duplicate it. What I hear out there is a strong whirring noise which kinda sounds normal from inside the valve cover area. But no tick.
Is ticking from injectors loud enough to hear outside with the hood up? All my blue clamps are tight by the way, I checked 'em tonight.
I'm gonna get a second opinion Monday. I don't think the dealer tested the injectors - I think their recommendation was based on me expressing a concern about power. Which I still think is down but difficult to quantify.
