Default 03 CTD exhaust questions

SO I was thinking of taking the muffler off my 03 CTD. What is the consensus on mufflers and 24 valve engines? I have been told two opposing theories.
1: The 24 valve needs a muffler or you will have issues with the engine.
2: It doesn't matter and the muffler is useless.
I don't normally like an overly loud truck and currently have a performance muffler on the truck. Just looking for info for possible future mods.

1 = an old wives tale. Completely false. My truck has been running straight pipe since day 1. (original owner did a muffler delete... I took it to a whole new level when I built it up)
2 = partially true. it's not useless... it's useful if you want a quiet truck. else it's not needed.

I have a 00 24v with 5" straight pipe, 5" down pipe off the S400, and compound twins. No muffler, no cat (98.5-02 never came with one), no resonator...

Diesel generators, water pumps, ect do not have a muffler, so no, you dont need a muffler on a ctd, a straight pipe to direct the exhaust is all you need.
