Default Gear Venders Under/Overdrive

Is anyone here using the under/overdrive from Gear Venders? What are the highway mileage gains? I do between 3 and 4k miles per month, and would love to save on fuel. What would be the engine rpms on an 05 automatic going 75mph?

I have 2005 2500 with 4.10's in the rear.

I don't have a set in my truck as of yet but I did call the company a few times and the price is 2995+45 shipping and that doesn't include the cost of either shortening the drive shaft or purchasing a new shaft at the right length.

I'm kinda torn by the price vs the savings in fuel. It seams to me that it would take a tremendous amount of miles to make the savings worth the price. I would even give them the benefit of the doubt and say even if it increased the mileage by 5-8 miles and i think that is a generous estimate, (might be cheeper to produce your own biodiesel then worry about the gearing).

Although if i were going to consider changing anything back there i am considering going with the gear vendor product. Just don't have an extra 3500 or so laying around burnng a hole in my pocket right now. lol

just my 2 cents worth.

I think I got this right, if I drive 40,000 mile per year and my fuel mileage went from 18mpg to 22mpg I would save $2,000 a year in fuel. Is it possible to get a 4mpg increase?

I would say a 4mpg would be pushing it a bit, you might also need a performance box on a low setting to see that.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH DREW, HONESTLY I THINK 1.5 TO 3 MPG INCREASE IS A GOOD GUESTIMATE DEPENDING ON YOUR DRIVING HABITS. PERSONALLY I THINK I'M GOING TO TRY THE QUADZILLA BOX FIRST BECAUSE AFTER ALL, I PLAN TO GET ONE ANYWAY AND IT IS A LOT CHEAPER AND THE WORST CASE SCENARIO I GET PONIES UNDER THE HOOD AND WE ALL KNOW THAT NEVER HURTS. I THATS NOT SASTIFACTORY ENOUGH I CAN ALWAYS BLOW THE 3 GRAND ON THE GEAR VENDOR.

I DON'T DO A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF TOWING BUT IF I DID, I THINK I WOULD PUT A LOT MORE THOUGHT INTO THE GEAR VENDER I THINK HAVING THE ADDED GEARS WOULD REALLY BE OF SOME HELP IF I WERE TOWING HEAVY LOADS OFTEN.

I wish Dana would offer some taller gears sets.. Like 3.02-1 or 3.20-1...

A diesels max fuel use is at the max tork curve.. on my 24v its 1600-1650 rpm range. If I could cruse at 1650 at 60mph, I think I could gain 4mpg easy.

YOU SHOULD CONTACT GEAR VENDOR. WHEN I CALLED THEM THEY SAID THAT MY FINAL GEAR WOULD BE 3.20 AND I HAVE THE 4.10'S IN MY 05 2500.

IF YOU ARE RUNNING 3.73'S THAT NUMBER WOULD BE LOWER.

ALSO THE GEAR VENDOR SET WOULD BE CHEEPER TO INSTALL IF YOU WERE INSTALLING IT YOUR SELF.

IT ALSO SEEMS LIKE IT WOULD BE AN EASIER INSTALL AND LESS TIME CONSUMING.

I THINK WHEN I FINALLY DECIDE TO PART WITH THE $3500 THATS THE WAY I'M GOING.

Had a 2003 Powerstroke crew cab dually. I changed rear end to 4.56 gears. Trailer to heavy for the original gears. I put in a gear vendors and didn't hardly notice any difference on the mpg maybe 1.5 or so. The only difference I noticed of course that I could run faster.

P.S. Didn't like the powerstroke and bought another cummins.

I have the Gear Venders Under/Overdrive on my 98 12 Valve. The truck had the Gear Venders unit on it when I bought the truck, used, earlier this year. I REALLY LIKE the flexability the Gear Venders unit gives me when towing or in the mountains. I have tried long runs, not towing anything, with the Gear Venders overdrive engaged and find that the mileage increases from 17 MPG to 20 MPG @ 70 MPH. My rpm @ 70 MPH is 1,500 with the Gear Venders engaged. When I disengage the Gear Venders, the rpm @ 70 MPH is 2,000 RPM. I am running the stock 215 tire size. My truck has an ATS automatic transmission, and ATS torque converter with a lockup controller and a 3.54 Rear End Ratio.

Considering the milage you put on each month, it would take 2.5 years to payout the Gear Venders unit. There is an added benefit. you will be staying in your max torque range at higher speeds, and there will be a lot less wear and tear on your engine and all of the engine driven accessories.

When you take all of the benefits into consideration; better mileage, lower RPM at high speeds resulting in less wear, the added flexability of the extra gears that allow towing, or pulling up mountians at your optimum torque RPM, I would recommend the Gear Venders Overdrive if you plan on keeping your truck for at least three more years.

I hope this helps you.

Ralph
