Default External Voltage Regulator

Good Evening. I have a 93 W250 Cummins. I am about to wire in an external voltage regulator to eliminate the overcharging and spiking volt meter. I have seen where 80's model regulators are being used to do this, but I have an older square regulator that uses spade connectors. It does not use the triangular plug. Has anyone used this type for the conversion? Thanks.
