Default What to do?

Here's the story
I'm looking for a "new" truck. I have looked at a lot of 95 to 01 2500. I have heard horror storie about the auto tansmission in these trucks and was wondering if there was any truth to it. I wouldn't mind having a stick, but I was just wondering what the real story is.
Also were there any other quirks to these trucks I should look out for?
I have owned several diesel trucks before but never a Dodge, I think its time to step upp and get a real truck now!
Thanks in advance

Steve

Just my 2 cents, I bought a 99 Ram 2500 Cummins leftover in August of 2000. I have 108,000 miles on it now. I just put a new MBRP 4" exhaust on it cause the rear of the factory muffler rotted out. 1 set of brakes, 2 sets of tires and that's it except for regular maintenance. It is garage kept, and I baby it while driving and I do alot of little things like oiling the door hinges, oil changes about 4000-5000 miles or after long trips. I been from Jersey to Texas and back in July towing a four wheel flatbed trailer with a 59 Chevy Apache on it and a 2 wheel tow dolly disassembled and put in the box with 4 people on board. Sturgis, South Dakota and back with 2 Harleys in the back and three on a trailer, plus people and luggage. Hauled trap rock, broken concrete, a torn down garage, and I forget what else with it. The funny thing is the more you load 'er up the better she likes it. Keep it greased, use good oils & filters and don't beat on it and you should be very happy. I'm currently getting 20.5 MPG around town. I just added the 4" exhaust and some of Drew's homebrew fuel mix, so I'll see what happens.

even though it isnt something to be truly worried about but keep an eye out for the '53' blocks they tend to develop cracks in the block.

other than that the older P pumped engines can make VERY impressive power very easy since they are mechanical. I rode in a 95 that had been tweaked quite a bit. guy leaned on the trottle just a bit in third and left a 50 yard signature on the asphalt before letting off.

my truck is fully electronic. since I work on electronics for a living this is good for me. nab my 4 chanel o-scope, laptop, and strap this bad boy on the dyno to see what's going on.

oh, two guys I know own diesel dragsters, one produces 675 hp on #2 only, and the other is hitting 730 on #2. with water and NO2 he can hit 808 on the dyno. I was watching the last one yesterday on the dyno and all I can say is it is VERY impressive, and VERY loud[8D]
