99 cummins wont start hot
anyone come across a 24 valve that start fine cold, rwil run forever but wont start after you turn it off until it is stone cold? this problem started last monday, right after I rolled over 300 000 kms. the motor just won't catch or sputter even. it just keeps turning over. It sucks because I have had to get towed home three times now, it will take you there but won't bring you back
check for codes, you probably have a dieing lift pump that needs to be changed immediately!!!
once the lift pump finely dies, you can kiss the VP44 injector pump good bye as well, but if you catch it early enough you can save the VP44.

I just read something about this yesterday in the instructions for a FASS transfer pump.
With your engine warmed up, if it won't start, try disconnecting the power to your transfer pump. Then try to start the engine. If it starts shut it off imediatly or injection pump damaged will occur! If the engine started with the transfer pump disconnected, you have a cracked diaphram in the injection pump. Have it repaired.
Cracked diaphrams are caused by low inlet pressure from clogged fuel filters or failing transfer pumps. They started makeing thicker diaphrams in 2003 to help with this problem.

I have a 98.5 that has the opposite problem it doesn't want to start when it's cold. It takes me putting my foot to the floor and cranking for a good 8-10 seconds before it fires. Once it fires up it runs fine. My lifter pump was replaced about two years ago and I only have put about 20,000 on it since. I am not sure if it is the fuel pump or not. My brother told me his friends acted the same way and he had to have the fuel pump replaced. Any advice guys?
Thanks,
Scott

Often, the "no hot start" is a sympton of a failing vp44. The fuel pressure is very important on the 24 valve motors. EVERYONE with a 24v should have a gauge. If the lift pump won't support 8psi at WOT it's toast, and the vp44 will soon be also.
Thats the main problem area with the 24v motor, since the fuel COOLS and lubricates the vp44. Failed vp44's don't always throw codes.
There are upgrades for the the fuel system, from adding a "pusher" pump, to a big line kit, or an all out FASS, to help prevent vp failure.

i have done the same things changed the pump. when it gets hot its like the pumps not able to turn on until its cool runs hot at 90 then when it cools below 60 it will start sgain and this doesnt happen all the time just when ever it wants.
