Default Switching to Diesel from Gas

I think it's about that time I get me a REAL MAN's truck. I am looking to get a one between 98-02, but I really don't know what I'm looking for since this would be my first diesel truck. I don't know of warning signs I should be looking for, or anything that might be wrong with it, which is why I need y'alls help. I am looking to get a 4x4 for sure. With all that said please HELP!

Thanks

#1, do a google search on Cummins 53 block. you will find a wealth of info about this problem. However, not all trucks have this problem, but it is just a warning.

#2, the VP44 while being a decient injector pump can be killed if the lift pump also goes out. before you do anything, get the lift pump tested. 12 or more pounds at idle is good, and 2-3 pounds at full is good. but at idle if it is below 8, and the truck has a defueling problem at full throttle, the lift pump needs to be changed.

#3, the tranny's. the NV4500 manual has a nasty habit of dropping 5th, but any good tranny shop can fix that easily to where it will never happen. and the 47RE auto, while being a good unit, turn the power up and you will fry the clutch packs.

realy that about it when it comes to the 98.5's-02

Not saying you are confused, but just to clear Drew up, the NV4500 is a 5 speed which has a low 1st gear that's great for towing. I've never personally dealt with the automatics, so I have no opinion on those. Depending on how much your hauling, maybe look at the 2500. I went right out and bought a 3500 dually for my first deisel (because I thought bigger is better, right), but using that as my daily driver can get tough to park it in a parking lot, or heaven help me, a garage.

IF your going 2nd gen then go with 98 not 98.5.... the 12 valve is a whole lot easier to tweak and what not
