Default Idle speed and weak brakes

Hello
I`m a Norwegian guy how just bought a 99 RAM 2500 4x4 with the Cummins and automatic trans.
What is the correct idle speed for the Cummins, mine is idling at 800+ rpm in neutral, is this correct?
My truck has an ABS light on the dash when I turn on the ignition that goes out after the engine have started so I asume it have ABS brakes.
The ABS do not work and I feel that the brakes are mushy and weak, I have to push on the pedal realy hard to make the truck stop.
The rotors and pads are in good condition. What can I do to improve the brakes?

Thank you
Vegard

Idle speed is alright. a touch high, but alright. mine idles at 750, but 800 wont hurt a thing.

next with the brakes, I would check to make sure the vacuum pump is working properly. the vacuum pump is behind the power steering pump and share a common shaft. sometimes the seals can go out and cause the vacuum pump to stop working, and left broken will take the power steering pump with it. the seal rebuild kit for the vacuum pump can be had for less than $10USD from Cummins.

Hi Drew
Thanks for the reply
Do you mean that the vacuum pump is for the servo brakes?
My truck do not have vacuum servo brakes, it have hydraulic servo of the power steering pump.
The power steering is functioning properly so the pump is OK.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Vegard
