Default Bang when hitting bumps...

Ok, When going over a fairly large sharp bump or pothole, there is a loud bang. I'm pretty sure that it only happens when the rear axle hit the hole. It sounds like the exhaust hitting the bottom of the cab but I can't find anything loose or looking like it has hit anything. Also, I think that it happens more when the right rear wheel hits a bump than the left (I first noticed it when my right rear wheel went in a pothole).

The truck only has 3500 miles on it so the bottom is still new looking. The bang sounds like it might be hitting the bottom of the cab and not the bed. I have checked for loose shocks, bolts and exhaust.

It doesn't do it in most everyday driving, only when hitting a pretty good bump, you can tell it's not normal, even my wife said "what was that".

Has anyone else had this happen? The truck is the one in my sig.

Thanks, Tim

I had the same noise, so when I took her in for her first checkup I had the dealer try to find the noise, a bang when I hit bumps. I thought my spare was lose & hitting the bottom of the bed. They checked it out and informed me it was my trailer hitch bouncing around when I hit bumps. Boy did I feel like an idiot. Oh well, better safe than sorry. Hope you find the problem.

In my case it isn't the hitch. I had thougt of this too and took the hitch out of the receiver and tried it over some bumps and it still did it. I stll have no clue. DR (from this forum) wrote me and said that his 06 is doing the same thing.

If this is a widespread problem I hope that someone figures it out. It is hard for me to find because it only does it when hitting pretty big bumps so it is hard to pin down. If it happens , it is hard to miss, a very loud bang from what sounds like the bottom of the cab. Oh well, we'll see.

Thanks, Tim

A common "bumping" cause is the lower shock mounts being loose (they need to be gorilla tight)...other than that, balljoints, trackbar, etc.

If this is a 2006 with only 3500 miles, I agree with checking the spare. I have a 99 and it is hung by a cable that lowers the tire down on a hanger. Maybe yours has come loose or unwound slightly, maybe the cable has stretched a little, or wasn't winched up tight at the factory, it's a heavy tire to be bouncing off the bed bottom.
Another longshot is to make sure your tailgate is seated properly on the bottom and locking tight, but if it's that loud the darn thing probably would have taken flight by now........
Have you tried checking the cab & Bed body rubber mounts (doughnuts)? Factories have great Q.C. Depts, but they are not perfect.......

.
I've got one of those type noises over bumps. Not too loud, but rather worrying on a brand new '06 w/ 230 miles.
