Default Rear axle seal ?

Got home last night from a 350 mile trip, to see smoke pouring off the drivers side rear brake, it appears the seal on the rear axle has blown, and diff fluid is flooding the brake.
Does anyone know if this is covered under the 7/70000 powertrain warranty. Also does anyone know what would cause the seal to fail so catastophically ?
The vehicle is a 2003 CTD with 52000 miles. I was ready for the lift pump, but this ?
Thanks

it should be covered since the axels are a part of the powertrain

Mine went too at about 50k. The dealership replaced both rear seals, but wanted me to pony up for new Dodge brake shoes ( [:@]about $200-300 as I recall, they said they were a special kind of material) since technically the shoes did not fail, the seal did. I replaced the shoes later on myself with some Raybestos brand shoes and they seem fine after 2 years, and the seal is fine too.

Thanks for the info guy's, I'll be sure to tell them to put the original pads back, and I'll change them later.
Did they do the job under warranty MC4YOU2 ?
