Default 92 cummins overdrive trans

I just became the proud owner of a 1992 ram 4x4 cummins diesel with only 46,000 original miles on it! The question I have, is on the dash there is a light/button that indicates when the overdrive is engauged or disengauged. Mine neither lights up or changes the engine RPM while driving. Is this a solenoid operated overdrive, and if so, is it easy to replace? Also, if there is no light, and the solenoid is broke, does it fail in overdrive or not? Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Thanks!

The button is there to lock out overdrive for towing purposes.

When you push the button does anything light up? [>:]
