Default Newbie question braking or tranny?

Hello everyone,
I am new to the forum and new to diesel. I am on my 3rd Ram though and my dh has a magnum. We are a Dodge family!!

I have an 06 Megacab with a cummins with only about 2500 miles on it. I wanted to ask if anyone has ever had a problem with their trucks when braking gradually. When coming to a stop light and gradually slowing down, the truck will downshift but it feels like someone has hit the rearend of the truck. Is this just a diesel downshifting (this is our first diesel) or indicative of a problem?

Thanks for any help.

this is normal, what is going on is the torque converter is locking in and unlocking useing the engine to assist in slowing the truck down. with a 17:1 compression it takes alot to compress air that much, so it is going to slow down when fuel is taken away.

if you had an exhaust brake on it you would swear a Mack truck hit you

Thank you so much, we were getting worried and not sure if it was normal. We are getting ready to take a trip in about a month and hoped we weren't going to have to put it in the shop before the trip.
