was looking at purchasing an 02 extended cab CTD 4x4 with 80k miles on it. I am new to diesel motors so not sure what to expect on the reliabilty of this year model. Asking price is 21,300 k. Is that a bit much? Wont be pulling anything more than ATV's.

 

I know there is an issue with the VP44 lift pump, not 100% sure what that issue is but they are not as relieable as hoped. There is an additive that is recommended to help the pump out with extra lubrication in the form of 16 oz of power service diesel and 8 oz of marvel mystery oil mixed with each tank. It's supposed to help extend the life of the lift pump. Others use it for a fuel milage increase.

Check the tranny fluid, make sure it's not burnt and make sure it shifts ok.

There are experts here who i'm sure will add to what I mentioned (and set me straight if i'm in error...)

 

The biggest thing to look out for is the VP-44. the early 24 valvers have troubles with the lift pump going out and starving the vp of fuel. since the vp is fuel cooled and lubricated it often fails if it doesn't have enough fuel running to it. You can help prevent this by getting a Fuel psi guage and monitoring your presure.

 

Other than the prob w/ the injector pump..... it would be a good truck. Back in Dec., I purchased my '01 Ram CTD 2500 with 65,000 miles for only $18,500 fron a dealership. I LOVE THE TRUCK!!!!!!!

Drew,

In regards to this matter.... My '01 has some play in the steering, the wife doesnt like to drive it because of this (oh well, more for me) how would I tighten the steering up a little to make it more responsive / less sloppy? Is there the adjustment screw on the top of the steering box like the older fords and chevys or is it something a bit more complex than that? One more question off the subject.... Where to find "power service diesel" to add to the fuel withthe mmo to lube the VP-44? Who makes the stuff?

yes there is an adjustment screw on the top of the box (should be, there's one on my 2000 1500 4x4), you'll need a hex set to make the adjustment, loosen the lock nut, turn the adjuster clockwise to tighten it up, shouldnt take much. too much and it'll bind up.

PSD & MMO are found at walmart for the lowest prices on it... There are 2 bottles, a white & a grey... the white gave me better mileage improvements, as for lubing the vp44, not sure which one to use... maybe that's what the mmo is for?

 

power service also has lubricative properties, MMO just gives a bit more
