Default My newest best friend (besides the wife)

Hi guys, first let me thank all of you for contributing to this website. I have really learned alot just from reading your posts.

Back in March of this year (06) I purchased my new Dodge, its a 2006 larime, red, 4x4,2500,auto,cummins (of course),quad cab short bed, lone star edition, I paid a little over 33k for it. So far I just love this machine. I look for reasons to drive it (ex. "honey were outa milk, i gotta go to the store"). So far i have added K@N intake, Bully Dog Tripple Dog, and performance muffler. This truck is a blast to drive, although I've learned that keeping my foot out of it really helps the fuel miliage, I can get 16.7 mpg if I'm gentle, normally its more like 14.3, lol.
I would like to comment on the guys that want to make the turbo louder. I never tried to fool with the baffle, I just went straight to ripping out the box and tube when i added the K&N. This did make a pretty good difference, and especially with the programmer, now when I take off you can hear the turbo spool up pretty good, sounds verrrry nice. My wife and I both agree, we would hate to be in a car next to me with the windows down when i take off. Its not obnoxoious, just realllly nice.
The Tripple Dog is an excellent product so far as I can tell. The third setting on it is just SICK!! Ive only ran it there twice to try it, kinda scared to run it too much b/c I dont have gauges yet (my next addition). Thanks to reading you guys posts, I know how important they are to have.
I do have a question though about the 500ppm low sulphur fuel as opposed to the 550ppm. I usually fill up on post, but today I filled up at a civilian station and was hit with the sticker that said 500ppm. I cautioned though about using this fuel in 2007 and later models. I asked the guy opposite of me filling up with it, and he commented that he does get more power out of it, but leads me to wonder if it is a thinner mix, or is it burning hotter and how will it affect my engine.
Anyways, thanks for the good stories so far, and hope to hear from you guys.

I take it your in the airforce. . .we have plenty of guys here in the military, I'm in the Georgia National Guard and also a civil service technician. Where are you stationed?

anyway, congrats on the ride, and I do the same thing cant get enough of the truck, but I still have my little yoda to drive as well since it is a bit more nimble in crowded parking lots. The 03 HPCR Cummins engine came from Cummins certified to run the ULSD fuel and B20. You realy dont have anything to worry about there, but you can do a mix of 16oz power service(If you can find it since there has been a temporary recall for labeling issues) and 8oz MMO. many here swear by this mix and gives them reliably 2-3 more mpg.

But, if you want to make you turbo louder, yank out the silencer ring. take two flat head screwdrivers to a snap ring on the front of the turbo and pull that off, then out will come this stamped piece of metal. put your intake on and drive it around. you'll notice it get so loud you might need to put your windows up[8D]

Thanks for the tip on the turbo, buuuuuttt, I'll probably leave it alone for now, lol. I don't want too much noise, were expecting our little girl anyday now, lol. Yeah, I'm AF reserve working out of Lackland, my wife is Active Army, stationed in Ft. Hood. Were from Fla. and can't wait to go back, no offense to Texans, we just love Fl. Im gonna add some gauges soon, does the onboard ECM already monitor EGT's, or do I have to instally a sensor for a pyrometer? Bully Dog has the "Outlook Monitor" that goes along with it, but I'm not real clear on how it works, I havent found too much info on it. I will probably get it though, I just wanna make sure that it monitors EGT's. I keep mine set on the second setting, but the third one worries me when it comes to producing too much heat. Anyways, hope everyone has a good Memorial day, oh, HANGOVER TIP# 1 drink peadalyte, sounds crazy but it works.

the ECM does not monitor egt's. but what I have found is in stock form the EGT's wont go much over 1000F which is nothing to worry about.

what you will have to do with the BD monitor is drill and tap for an EGT probe, pre-turbo is better since it reacts quicker and will keep you from burning up the turbo cause it will tell you when things are getting too hot.

installing one is easy and can be done yourself in about an hour. just make sure you have the right drill bit, tap and lots of heavy grease to catch shaveings

Thanks for the tip. Once the baby is born i'll probably go to my dads in La. and install it there. Any suggestions as to which brand is better for the sensor?

you usualy get the thermocouple with the gage, just make sure you hook the leads up properly, I had mine backwards at first and it was rather interesting to see negative temps

God, I want a turbo diesel That's a great truck you picked up!

On a side note, I actually lived at Ft. Hood for about 5 1/2 years...and that place has so many memories for me! I miss Texas something crazy. I graduated from Ellison High School in Killeen

Welcome to the board and watch out....Texas can grow on you....
