Default New cummins break-in

I just got my 06 3500 Mega Dually Laramie a couple of weeks ago (took 3 months to get it!!)... I waited the 500 miles before I towed anything with it, and took it a little easy on it.. I picked up my plates at the dealership yesterday and the guy there told me to "load it up" and "drive it hard" for the first 10-15K miles and I should get at least 19-20 mpg on the highway unloaded, maybe more... He said if I "baby" it during the break-in, I'll never get decent mileage. He said at about 5000k miles, the mileage should start going up and level out at about 15,000miles... I'm getting about 16mpg at 65mph unloaded.. 13 towing at 60-65..

The owners manual actually says to drive 50mph or under for the first 1000 miles of towing.. That's a little hard for me!!! I tow a 3 horse steel trailer that's probably close to 14000 lbs loaded...

I'm a newbie to diesels, so please take it easy on me, but what is the best way to break-in a new Cummins??? Any other advice for a new engine?? Thanks.........

thanks for the help....

welcome to DF!

you have to post pics... otherwise you could be banned... (joke) lol

beat it and beat it good. it'll love you for it. someone mentioned in another thread that if every diesel had a breakin period like that, trucking companies would suffer big time waiting to use their trucks.

also, there is a mix "Drews Brew" as some call it... 16 oz of power service diesel and 8 oz of marvel mystery oil per tank that will help you with better milage. I started using it and from day 1 my truck (bought with 13k on it) ran smoother. eventually at 20~25k miles i would suggest switching to synthetic oil. I just did mine and the motor runs even smoother now. hard to believe but there are times I'm not even sure the motors on...

the guy is right, the first 500 or so miles is just for making sure the bearings in the diff, tranny, and transfer are all seated well.

right now I would say load it up with as much as you can put on that trailer and drive it like you stole it. the tranny, diffs, frame, and body will give out LONG before the engine.

these engines are pretty well 'broken in' when delivered to DC and just like my toyota, the engine runs better with the more mileage I put on it.
