what oil filters do you guys like??
oil change is due again, and was just curious to what oil you guys like, or think is the best? i've been running wix, but have tried on from amsoil.. would like to find a smaller micon if thats possible without the by-pass filter. thanks
My self at the next oil change I am going to use the premium Fleetguard STRATAPORE LF16035 (I got the 4/2/1 kit from http://www.genosgarage.com/ as no one has the filter around here) until such time I find one that is better & affordable and will hold up in the CTD.
As for by-pass I need to save a few more $$ for things in the house then I will be buying the Amsoil by pass set up and at 20,000 miles I will start to use Amsoil HDD SERIES 3000 - SAE 5W-30 Synthetic.
I'm useing the same filter. . .besides, the fleetguard standard filter you see is what is put on the engine when you drive off the lot, only it has been remarked by mopar.
the strattopore filter is a bit more, not much, but is worth it in my eyes.
the Donaldson endurance that amsoil has does look like a good filter and I may try it in the future, I just have a stock pile of filters I need to go through first.
oh, BTW, dont use fram oil filters on this engine. the oil pressures generated by the pump will literaly blow out the internals of the filter leading to bad things down the road

Drew, you should write a book called "Oh , BTW".
Thanks for the warning on the filter, I will use the one I bought as a paper weight. Guess I am lucky my oil didn't need changing.

I agree, I used NAPA filters for the first few years in my 99 CTD cause a friend got me a helluva discount on a case of each, but now I use the 4/2/1/ kits from Geno's Garage. Good price, quick delivery.
Six pack cases of Rotella-T from Sams Club from day 1.

yah, i just order a 4/2/1 kit from geno last night and a cabin air filter, hope to keep some of the dust of the dash. look like he has pretty good prices, and alot of differnet things great site.
Just purchased a 1995 Ram 2599 SLT 4x4 Cummins w/o a manual. I want to change the oil, what's reccomended for these engines? Synthetic? What weight? How many quarts? Does it pay for me to have the old oil analyzed?
Do you think a 1997 Diesel Owners Manual would be close enough to be of value? Like $12. Better than nothing...$26 for the 1995 manual.
Where does a guy get these special purpose oil filters? I am going to be towing a 10,000# 5th. wheel.
When I started it cold this afternoon there was a bluster of smoke, white, that went right away. The next time I started it after sitting for a few hours there wasn't any noticeable smoke. I didn't notice it at sea level where I picked up the truck, but here in Colorado I noticed it.
Any direction is appreciated.

well tony, 15w40 is what you want to use. who you use is up to you, Ive been running Delo 400 but I just got my shipment of AMSoil yesterday
Personaly, if you are going to use this truck for pulling, synthetic is the way to go. put in a bypass filter, and have the oil analyzed every 8k and it will tell you when to change the filter and top off with fresh fluid. Some guys that do oil analysis can go well over a year before they change the oil. so since you are going to be putting alot of miles on the truck it would be worth it. if you want a good manual on how much oil to use, check out dodgeram.org in there you will find how much oil to use and other info. also check out cummins quickserve, I have the link at the top. this would be another wealth of info for you.
as far as filters I get mine from Geno's Garage they will have all the filters you need at a good price.
last, the smoke. . .dont worry about it. these trucks will naturaly do this when cold. also the altitude is higher and the air is thinner.
