Default 1993 CTD with 5speed Problems

Love the forum, have a question and seeking a more experienced answer. We use the trucks for work, and at about 325K miles we are now having to look at another transmission. The first one was a suprise and even bigger was that it required auto trans fluid for lubrication. As the cost of repairing or replacing is more than this truck is worth, what would be required for dropping in an automatic. I know we would need the trans, flex plate, converter and have a new drive shaft made. I am just not sure if these would require an adapter that might be another thing to consider. Thanks in advance for the help. Buy the way. We only run the CTD and this is one out of 5 trucks all into the 250K mileage range. I LOVE THIS ENGINE>

you'll also need a kickdown cable from the injector pump to the trans, and a few other wires. not impossable, but it might cost more than you think to get it running right.

it is easier to go frrom an auto to a manual than the other way around.

if your realy looking for a good trans, see if you can find a wrecked 01-05 with a 6spd. this will be the trusty NV5600 and will last as long as the Cummins engine. I have one in my truck and it's a good tranny. big and bulky and weighs a pant load (about as much as some small block v8's these trannys are very picky with the oil you use. and they are no longer made. 5w30 MTF is what you need.

the NV5600 is a 6 spd with pretty close gear ratios to keep the engine better into the power band over the 5 spd. 1st is a good granny gear and 6th give a .73 final drive ratio. the input max torque is written as around 550lb-ft, however there are many that are pushing well past the 1000 mark without a problem. after 1500lb-ft the aluminum bell houseing needs to be replaced with a cast iron piece and still no internal changes. I doubt you would want to turn that truck up that high, but it does give you another option. you can tell it is the NV5600 if the shifter is still attached reverse will be next to 5th. the new G56 made by mercedes will have reverse next to 2nd.

hope this helps.
