Default 6 speed swap

what does it take to put a 6 speed into a stock 2001 2500 4x4 dodge cummins diesel? it currently has the 5 speed

Why? I loved my 5 speed... The 6 is to low a gear ratio IMHO. Made even worse with the 3:73's If I had 3:55's it would not be that bad. But the 6 speed in my 2006 is the same as a 5 speed with 4:11's (gen 2)

1st gear is the same in both trannys. 5th and 6th are also the same. the only advantage is that there is an extra gear in the middle. The only use it has is that it makes better towing. I'd say if you are not towing over 5000lbs. on a regular basis, the 6 speed isn't going to be worth the trouble of swaping it out.
