the VP44 pump was fazed out in 02. in 03 the HPCR engines useing the CP3 pump was introduced. the CP3 so far has been a good pump that wont fail when the lift pump does.

now about the lift pump. in 05.5 somewhere, the filter mounted lift pump was moved from there to in the tank. DC thought it would be a good move to do this in order to keep the pump cool. well, it still fails. it can be replaced, but now you have to drop the tank in order to replace the pump. I tend to think the pump was moved to the tank to make it more expensive and troublesome for people to add aftermarket pumps to increase performance, kind of a deterrance.

We have seen very few of the newer in-tank pumps fail.
In fact I can only think of one off the top of my head, that was on a late-build '03.

I don't know what theier logic was in doing this, but I think it seems to be working.

EDIT: come to think of it, that '03 was of course the original filter mounted pump - but it was replaced with an in-tank module.
So I guess we never have replaced one.

I just purchased a new '05' so where do I find the lift pump if it isn't in the tank. Frame mounted or is it attached to the block.

it will be mounted on the back of the fuel filter close to the firewall if it is not in the tank.

if your build dat is sometime in Jan 05 then you might still have the last few that were mounted to the fuel filter. there were quite a few mechanical changes that happened from 05 to 05.5, lift pump, Manual tranny just to name two.
