Default Exhaust Idea and other questions

This is the first Diesel I have owned, but I have been modding gassers for a while!

I am beginning to plan my mods and need some opinions as I gather my data.

1. I am at about 550 miles....when is the gas milage going to improve??
2. Has anyone ever done a 4" cutout with a power plate right after the turbo? This way it could be stock when towing or crusing but racing you could hit the switch and go wide open.
3. Do you think the Banks or other innercooler upgrades are worth the gain?
4. What about the intake to the turbo, good idea to get a more free flowing one?
5. I will get a programmer, so far I like the Edge with attitude, turbo-timer and all....sounds sweet, anyone have any dyno results? What do these trucks put to the ground stock. I will baseline mine soon when I hit 1K miles or so.
6. Other suggestions for mods?

Thanks,

PJ

the best thing you could do right now for mileage is to tow with it... if that's not an option then drive it hard for the next 15k~20k miles. stay away from the synthic oil until after 30~35k miles. your mileage will improve as time goes on. there are cheep mods that you can do to improve mileage and more expensive ones that will get you the best of both worlds... programmers are the expensive route, a rotteck timing sensor is the cheep route.

you can start using 16 oz of power service diesel and 8 oz of marvel mystery oil on every tank... that is good for 1~3 mpg improvement. there are tons of mods out there that you can do... just depends on what your after.

edit: oh yeah, if you open up both the intake & exhaust too much, you'll loose low end torque but your upper end will perform really well. if you loose your low end torque, your mileage will suffer...

New owner of a 04 Single Wheel 3500...42,000 miles, stock and a daily driver....Looking to upgrade with a intake (K&N), as well as an exhaust....i have read many topics on exhaust....Here is what i got from them:

I should go with a 4in from turbo back...leaving the cat and res. still installed with no muffler (need to pass inspections)
Also with the K&N Intake

Will this be a positive improvment?
Thanks

welcome to df...

yes it is... open the intake and exhaust helps alot. be aware though that like a gasser, if you open up one end or the other too much your low end will drop & you'll lose fuel economy. I would also look to the AFE Stage 2 setup. with the understanding that the Proguard 7 filter WILL loose you approx 1 mpg. that is the bigger filter of the 2 kits available, it's also the more expensive 1.

I have one on my truck and no way in hell it's going anywhere.

Wow..you lost 1 MPG because of the filter. I did not expect that, I do like the AFE...especially after DP Mag. declared it the loudest sounding(turbo and sucking noise) of all the ones they tested!

Steve. I'm actually installing my exhaust this weekend. I'm putting in a 5 inch turbo back magnaflow. Do you think my low end torque is going to suffer with my K&N installed?
