Default smokin voltage regulators

welllll, my 91 ctd 183k still runs and runs and runs, weather being warm and after lunch leting it idle for 45 min w/air con on as I have for years, I started to head back to work, noticed volt meter @ 10 volt and not charging on rev up, next day before start up checked battery w/ external volt meter and sitting at 12.38 volts, went to work volt meter climbs to 13.5 driving and on idle at stop sign back to 10 volts swings from 10/13 not holding, air on drops to 12, sooo installed a new volt regulator, cracked one rib doing it #%&**^$
started it up 10 volts at idle climbs to 13.5 rev up climbs to 15 topped out at 17 WHAT???, sat for two days drove to work it swings 10 at idle to 14.5 on drive, lunch time again idle 45 min, back to work 10 volts never did climb back to charge. this morning back to work 10 volts it then spiked to 17 volts and i got a wire burn smell in side the cab,and it now sits at 10 volt dead no climb nadda, where do I go from here? 2 voltage regs. may be time to sell? help!
