Lift pump: true or false
[sm=icon_rtfm.gif] The service manual says: "Fuel volume from the fuel transfer (lift) pump will always provide more fuel than the fuel injection pump requires." [sm=huh.gif]
At what point in modifications does this become false? [sm=confused06.gif]
(Basically I'm looking for an official reason to spend some $$ on a FASS pump.)
Thanks for the thoughts...

#1, when the lift pump dies, and it WILL
#2, when the VP44 is requesting more fuel than the lift pump can provide, thus dammageing the pump.
#3, WHEN the lift pump dies, to which it will, if you are not carefull the VP44 WILL die as well. when this happens a new VP44 is mega $$$$
if I were you to save a MAJOR headache I would go ahead and dump the stock lift pump and install a fass or walbro kit.

if your sold on the FASS system then hit up Ken's Performance
however you can also do a little research and find that the Walbro Kit from Glacier Diesel works very well also.

Drew,
Ever hear of Vulcan Performance? I found this FASS HPFP with a big line kit from them and am thinkin about gettin it.

All I'm lookin for right now is the high performance pump, not the whole FASS system.
Thanks again for the info!!

Add-on to above post...
www.vulcanperformance.com is their website. Just got an email from Eric there...turns out they don't do the big line kit with the pump anymore, but I asked him if they could "piece me one together"...so waiting on that.
I'm not too knowledgable on the diesel fueling system...and I wanna make this as easy as possible to back up my few performance upgrades (EZ, exhaust, intake...hopefully more someday)...and of course, spend the least amount of $$ while doing it.
Thanks again guys!

the best way to do this would be to continue to use the stock fuel filter, remove the stock lift pump, install the adapter to go inplace of the lift pump then plumb everything in from there.
I would suggest a fuel pressure gage along with this, it will tell you how much pressure you have in the system. and 0psi on a VP44 at any rpm is asking for trouble.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but with all the talk about lift pumps and injector pumps. With a stock '06 should I worry, or is the new ('06) set up good to go if kept stock?
Drew: What adaptor in place of the stock lift pump? You mean an aftermarket pump? Or is there a kit needed to go in its place when installing something like a FASS 95gph HPFP?
To me it sounds like I buy the FASS pump, and it just takes the place of the stock one. Doesn't sound too hard...but I'm intimidated.

Nick, in 05.5 DC started installing the lift pump in the fuel tank in hopes it would prevent so many failures, early reports have been it works for the most part. If it were up to me though a better pump than the one they get from Carter would be better. if your stock, or mildly modified(under 100hp) then your fine. if you notice your performance go down, and your mileage follow suit then your lift pump is going out. I still have my stocker that is located on the filter houseing and I have no intentions on haveing the dealership touch my truck to put one in the fuel tank, or the dreaded back up horn of death.
Loserana, in the kit you get there will be an adapter plate(or there should be one) that goes in place of the stock pump. the Fass pump which is generaly mounted on the frame rail, gets plumed to this adapter plate. the fass pump does not go in the same place as the stock pump, it wont fit.
