On my old powerstroke[:'(] it had a feature that when it hit a certain temp. outside, after about 1 minute the engine would switch into a high idle mode. The colder it got, the higher the idle up to a certain limit. Does my '05 Cummins with 6spd have this feature? Some say yes, some say no, some say I need to 'turn it on' at the dealer, and some say I don't need it. Also, when I purchased the truck the salesman said that it has a block heater I just need to purchase the cord as this is an option, although I shouldn't need it as is garrenteed to start at -20 degrees. Is this a special cord or can I make my own. Also, where exactly is the block heater located? Here in Michigan I can get times in the winter where it will stay below 0 for a few weeks at a time. My ford always started when not plugged in, but you can hear the pistons switching holes until it warms up.[:@] I have a place at work where I can plug it in at night (I work third shift) And it sure was nice when I started it up that there was already warm air coming out the heater.

P.S.....I purchased this truck new in May, so this is the first winter on her....

I think it has the automatic high iidle when its cold out. It idles at 1000rpms. As far as activating the manual high idle, I don`t know if it is on the stick, but my automatic has it, and I had it activated at the dealer for free. All the engines have block heaters, and maybe someone hear knows where to get a cord cheap(as mine came with it) I`m sure others will chime in soon with more info. Kevin

the cord is behind the bumper on the passenger side. if you dont see if from the top, take a peak from the bottom, it should be there.

 

Thanks guys. I will crawl underneath and look for the cord. Hopefully its not in a bad place to get to. On my buddys duramax it was balled up and ziptied to the engine mount. major ordeal to get to. Someone at GM had to be sick and twisted to mount it there. Also wasn't long enough to get out the hood properly. GTXpooch, thanks for the redirect for the other thread, helped alot. If I half to I have a cummins center about 30 miles down the road.

FYI, the cord for the block heater is an optional item, some have it and some don't. I had to go buy mine ($34.00 & tax) as the stealership did not order it from the factory. If it's installed at the factory it is only $10.00 optional add on.

There are two different idle up features in our trucks. One is standard, when it is a certain temp outside it will idle up to 1000 on its own. The other is a optional idle up that can be controlled via the cruise control buttons. The optional one has to be enabled by the dealer. It can be enabled on either the manual or the auto trans vehicles, but if you have the 6 speed you need a clutch switch kit for it to work.

I don't have the engine heater plug either, and plan on getting one. It really strikes me as petty that they would make that an option. Had to be some fresh out of college accounting type that made that call.
