Default damper for hvac stuck to defrost position??? HELP

I have a 96 cummins with a damper control valve problem. The damper is stuck the the defrost position which is the position when you lose vacuum. I took the valve out and it appears to be fine. Where can I look for vaccum lleaks? Where does the hoses come from? Need help please. Thanks

Default RE: damper for hvac stuck to defrost position??? HELP

Welcome 12v....... I have a 95 and a pretty good guess at what the problem may be.

Down on the floor, in the center "hump section", up towards the front should be your airbag controller. It's a seperate piece of plastic that is colored like the dash. I has 2 screws. It may also say "SRS" or something like that. Remove that cover to help access where I want you to look.

Once that cover is off. Look up behind the module. You should be able to see a silver vacuum servo. If you place your head down near the gas pedal, and look towards the passenger side, right under the dash where it ends, you should see the end of the servo where the vacuum line attaches. On the opposite end of the servo is the pushrod. It's the pushrod we need to see. Not at the servo end, but the other end.

I hope you're with me so far........lol. I apologize for any confusion.

Ok, now, when you are finally able to see the end of the pushrod, it should be connected to a white piece of plastic. I may have disconnected there. If it is connected, then the white piece of plastic is what's broke. It has a tiny retaining clip. And once it breaks and falls out, it is no longer "mechanically attached" to the damper door.

I will try to find a pic from a manual. It's EXTREMELY tough to get to. If you plan to move the airbag module for more room, make sure you discconect the battery neg, and then turn the key on for about 10 secs to discharge any caps. Now you can unplug the module.

Good luck. Feel free to PM with any other questions. You'll find a ton of cool people on here with unlimited info.LOL.

GUESS WHAT?!?!?!?!?!.lol. I found the pics. The red arrow points to the part that's probably broken. The ***gy teil color is that part, only I circled it.lol. I picked a sad color.

Hope this helps. And make sure you start the truck, and then to make sure that servo has movement.
