I've always been kinda fascinated by the whole train thing. Like, what do they haul? It looks like it's just like oil, gravel, wood, cars, ect? How does everything get everywhere? Like, is there some sort of 5 mile long building setups everywhere where a train just pulls up and everyone who has something on it picks their stuff up there?
How come you don't see caboose's anymore?
How can a guy driving a 50 car train backwards possibly see where he's going? I mean, I know he's on a track, but what if something else is too?
Tons of questions ... I'm like a 2 year old with this stuff.

Let me answer these as I read them......lol
1. what do they haul? You name it. Cars, trucks, trailers, dog food, paper, staples, propane, acid, food oils, petroleum oils, liquor, sludge, garbage. The debris from the WTC attacks came up thru Binghamton for MONTHS and MONTHS. Created 4 steady jobs and a lot of guys made a lot of money.
2. How does it get everywhere? Well, lets say I bring a train to Binghamton, NY. There are currently 4 railroads that operate in Binghamton. And luckily, they are all connected within a mile of each other.lol. Ok, I come to Bingo town with 150 cars. Some cars are Norfolk Southern cars that will stay in town to service industries. Feed plants, plastic pipe manufacturing, coal for the electric plant, etc. Some cars will be exchanged with the other railroads. Some cars continue thru down to the ports, or to railroad farther down the line.
3. Like, is there some sort of 5 mile long building setups everywhere where a train just pulls up and everyone who has something on it picks their stuff up there? No five mile long buildings. If a customer gets product by rail, then they have track where the cars are placed. That's the indusrty work. But before the local switcher goes out to do his work, another crew has to switch out all the cars that just arrived. The get seperated and classed, and then delivered to their destinations. If the electric company has a special delivery, like a transformer, we will park the train someplace where they can access it.
4. Cabooses....a VERY sore subject with the old timers....lol Cabooses went out of the picture because of two reasons. #1, the railroads got sick of paying 6 guys to be on a train. Now you have 2. Maybe 3 guys if you are an industry switcher and need a brakeman.
2nd. If you watch the *** end of the train at night, you will see that flashing light attached to the coupler. That is an EOTD.... End Of Train Device. It's a telemetry device. It tells me a few things. When the train is moving, when it's stopped, what my hind air pressure is, and I can initiate an emergency brake application from the rear if needed.
Anything else, just ask......LOL. Maybe Drew or Steve will let you start a train section.LOL

Damn ... with all of that switchin and swatchin going on, it actually sounds more expensive to ship something by rail unless your getting a buttload of cars filled with your stuff. It's gotta be a job and a half keeping track of all of those cars whereabouts as well as their contents. I can't even imagine the stress with that job.
