Default Engine Tick;Rough Idle;engine light

Hey guys:

New to the forum. Really getting discouraged on my 06 cummins with only 12000 miles. I have noticed a tick in the motor since about new. It sounds like a lifter or rocker arm noise. The truck has run fine up until a few weeks ago and I got an engine light that stayed on for 24 hrs or so then went off. Then I developed a rough idle with lots of blue smoke at startup. (Now this is in 75 degree weather so I know it is not normal. I have owned a cummins for 10 yrs).

Well, to make a very long story of crappy service and taking the truck to 3 dealers, now basically it has been in the shop for a week and they still dont know what is wrong with the truck. All I can get from the service advisor is that the regional diesel tech looked at the truck and will be sending more programming for the computer. Now one of my other dealers did a reflash for the hard start and miss which did nothing. My concern is "why dont they at least run the valves and check the injectors? Not sure if they have but wouldnt that make sense?

Also, this is the third trip/3rd dealer for the same problems? Is this a possible lemon law case?

This dealer that I am at now seems to be taking the most time and effort but it scares me that they dont seem to have a clue yet!

One dealer I took it to said without even listening to the truck "if all we had to work on was a cummins diesel, we would be polishing our toolboxes!. I told him he probably had never seen the inside of a tool box. he was a service man behind the desk! So he blew me off and took my money for the jake brake install. Never go back there again.

Anyway, the tick is really audible at 30-40 mph just cruising and you can really hear it when u decel. Sounds like a lifter that is not pumped up. I have driven 2 other 06 cummins and neither sounded this way so I am not accepting this as normal.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

gw

Solid lifter's. It wouldn't be hard for you to check the valve lash. What was the fault code. Also be able to check to see which hole it is in by disconnecting injectors one at a time. or taking an IR temp gun on the exhaust manifold.

sounds like a noisey injector...

get some power service diesel and marvel mystery oil, mix 16 oz of PSD and 8 oz of MMO into a full tank and take it for a spin... drive it until you get about 1/4 tank left and re-fill... I'll bet your tick will be gone. we use the above mixed (AkA drews brew) in every tank and it consistently gives better mileage on each tank. on new trucks it smooths the engine out significantly. It did on mine and everyone who uses it when they get their truck new. try it.

btw, welcome to df...

I swear, stories like this drive me crazy. I just dont get how a whole "mechanic shop" or "service dept" can be so useless.

Hey all,

First off, new to this forum and really like it. Learned allot reading these post. I have a 06 2wd quad cab. No mods yet but a bunch to come soon!! Anyway I have about 3500 miles on mine and have noticed the same ticking noise when I decel. Was planning on taking a trip to the dealer myself. Have not had any lights yet but the idle seams a bit rough also. I am a aircraft mechanic so I am always paying attention to these types of things. Kinda figured it was just me not hearing it before but I agree, not normal.
Also, I have been running the "drews brew" since the first fill up so I dont think this will help out. Be very intersted to see what they come up with. My first thought was injector or mabe torque converter not unlocking or racheting b/c I only hear it when I decel.
