Default Some Newby Q's

Greetings,

This is not only my first Dodge, it's my first Diesel. Did a lot of research and...against my desire to buy a Chevy (always been a Chevy guy) I decided to go with Cummins. The truck: 2006 (used) Quad Laramie 4x4, 11,500 miles. Previous owner installed Bank's Monster muffler and SS tailpipe, Bank's torque converter, and drop-in air filter. I will be equiping it to haul a 5th wheel camping trailer and/or trailering Jeeps. I've learned a lot already from this site and look forward to learning more!

My Newbie Q's -

Best oil filter and oil? (previous owner ran Delo)
Are all Diesel fuels the same? (example, I prefer Chevron gas)
Does the turbo always whine? (mine seems to....at hwy speeds under no-load I can hear it).
I keep getting a check engine light after a cold start. Code: P2609 (intake heater). Seems to start just fine, but still getting the code. I'm not conveniently located to a dealer, just want ot know if it's anything to worry about.

Thanks!

welcome to DF... congrats on purchasing the best diesel truck out there IMO.

there are 2 versions of diesel out there, diesel #1 is primarily for cold weather while #2 is for warmer weather, i'm no expert on it since i live in CA and I havent seen #1 here at all so beyond what I mentioned, cant add too much to it. Delo is ok, I used mobil Delvac before I switched to amsoil. you'll want to stick with conventional dino oil for at least 30k on the odometer before switching to synthetic if you choose to. cummins recommends 25k IIRC.

If you go to the top of the forum, there is a merry christmas thread at the top which has a link to a site with the manuals available for downloading, i'd suggest getting one. As far as you code, sounds like your intake heater is not kicking on when it needs to, check the fuse box for any blown fuses and see if there is a relay in there (probably is) to control the power to it. it's located under the intake manifold on the drivers side of the motor, I dont have a pic of the stock one but here's an aftermarket one that you can use for reference to find it... http://www.atsdiesel.com/ATSWebsite/...InManifold.asp it sits right under where the A is in ATS.

when can we see some pics?

Chevron delo is ok oil, cummins recommends it in their big bores. As for diesel, fill up at your station, just check for water in your fuel after about 2 or 3 tanks, if there isn't any in the fuel you should be fine filling up there. Yes the turbo while whine going down the highway, if the previous owner did all that stuff to the truck, he probably pulled the silencer ring out of the turbo. as for filters, you'll want to run fleetgaurd, they're part of cummins and make real good filters, also if anything warrenty happens, there are a part of cummins. The fuel filter # FS19579, I can't remeber the oil filter one without crawling under the truck. Drew can tell ya though. There should be a relay for your intake heater you might want to check that.

Thanks y'all. I had the CEL reset @ 'zone, I waited a little longer b4 starting this morning (38deg) and it didn't throw a code.

How about NAPA Gold oil filter? The parts guy said it was made by Wix. Also, what about the K&N oil filer? Haven't yet found a source for Fleetguard in our small town.

I'll post a pic as soon as I can figure out how too....

I bought a n. gold / wix and promptly returned it about 15 seconds after my credit card cleared. The filter had loose matter in it and looked like it was going to fall apart. I use fleetguard. you can google for those or go to genos and get a years supply.
