Default Stinky engine oil blowing in cab through heater vents! Help!

I have a 2003 F350 Cummins Diesel that is blowing stinky engine oil smell into the cab of the truck (coming in from heater vents.) It gets the stinkiest when the truck is idleing. We have had it in the shop 2x for this. The first time they replaced a gasket and the second time they told us to add a "freshener" to the oil so it smelled better. Our reaction was "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING RIGHT!?!?" Needless to say we are very frustrated......We just bought the truck in July and changed the oil 1x with Rotella. We don't know what they ran in it previously but it didn't smell oil in the cab when we first got it. It has 99,900 miles on it. It is due for a oil change and we are thinking of trying a different brand oil. However my husbands 95 Dodg diesel has always ran Rotella in it and never smelled. It has 350,000 miles on it and still going strong so I don't understand how it could be the oil? ANY IDEA'S greatly appreciated. THANKS!

I'd guess it has to do with where a breather is routed. Rotella is pretty stinky stuff, I know the breather on my truck stinks to high heaven for a few thousand miles after an oil change. My truck has the breather pointed so that the fumes don't reach the cab, though. I'd check out where any engien vents are routed (If this is not a common rail engine there should be a breather on the timing cover, old 12V engines had the oil fill in this spot). That's about all I can guess about it, since it isn't a Dodge.

I too have this problem from time to time. I've yet been able to figure out an answer unfortunately, and I too use Rotella.

Mayfair, If you look on the front of the engine there is a hockey puck looking thing with a large tube that comes up a little bit, then head straight toward the ground, that's your breather, at times this can send some fumes into the cab. Many people have gone to catch bottles and all kinds of other remedies to take these fumes away from the cab vents.
