Changed my oil for the 1st time using 12 quarts of Shell Rotella T 5W-40 SYNTHETIC and MOPAR Filter on my 2006 Ram at 1,900 miles. At idle, I smell something that I think is oil. No leaks, no visible oil anywhere, no Check Engine Light. Does SYNTHETIC Oil have a smell or is there another problem? Thanks.

 

Normal with the rotella, it should go away in a couple hundred miles. Just a question, but why synthetic oil at 1,900 miles?

 

Yeah, it's normal. I've read something somewhere about re-locating the breather line away from the fan to help eliminate the smell.

 

It seems that this complaint only comes when people use rotella so i'm betting it's the oil. I use delo 400 but because I get it free- that's all our shop pretty much uses.

 

I think your right, but I'm wondering why? The oil is on the INSIDE, not the out. How does the smell get out?

 

It must be coming out the breather. I don't know why it only seems to be rotella.
