Default Crankshaft positioning sensor

Hey , I'm new on this site and been reading alot of the topics and it seems you guys know alot about these cummins engines. I just bought an 01 2500 about a month ago and I washed the engine and I had my first encounter with the check engine light. I had the code read and it's my crankshaft positioning sensor. My question is can you put these in yourself or is it better to put out the money to have Dodge put it in?

it might not be bad at all. You may have gotten water in it some how and it's not making a good connection. Apparently these connector are real touchy when it comes to a solid connection.

If you do need to replace it... it's very easily done by yourself. It's not in the easiest location to get to but, it would be a matter of screwing off the old and screwing back on the new.

I know in my truck, the battery negitive wire that attaches to the block needs to be unbolted and taken out of the way to reach the sensor.

Yeah, thats an ugly one to reach, but simple to do once you get there. I think the '01 still uses the one like mine, held in place bya tab with a little metric bolt (10mm head). Tab comes off easy, but with half a decade of corrosion behind the sensor o'ring, plan on breaking the sensor when removing. Typicly the connector socket part breaks, but you can pull it out with pliers.
