probably the best way for me to describe it is the backpressure forces the motor to work a little more to get the air & exhaust in & out. the by product of this is part throttle respose (tq)goes up, top end HP goes down.
alot of the marketing on products out there is geared towards telling you what you want to hear, which applies to WOT dyno runs. any "gains" of 20/25/30 or whateve HP all come at WOT. it's hard to put a # on part throttle response & gains.

On my '03 ram hemi i put an intake in and put a magnaflow muffler in place of the stock can. because what i had read told me mileage would go up. all i can say is the vehicle definately revved a lot easier and seemed more happy in WOT. but my daily driving mileage went down amile per gallon or so. put stock muffler back in and mileage went back up. i figured it was due to the fact that the stock muffler constricted exhaust flow more and hence gave it more back pressure. I went back eventually and welded the magnaflow in place of the stocker becuase i liked the sound and how it ran.all that being said i understand what steve05ram360 is saying. diesels may be different than gassers. and so you know i drove the truck the same for a couple of tanks of gas with both mufflers on just cruising and no romping on it.
