Default Shifting Problem

Well, this is my first post on this forum. I guess that makes me the new guy.

Anyway, I just bought my 1st CTD back in April. (after drooling over one for 10 years)

Mine is '01 2500 CTD Quad Cab, Long Bed, Laramie, 4x4 with limited slip, Automatic, 205k miles.

It has developed a shifting problem that only affects 1st gear. I went to the dealer, but they want $95 / hr to look at it, before they can diagnose the problem, let alone charge me $95 / hr more to fix it. So, here I am!

I can accelerate, and it won't shift, unless I let off the accelerator. I mean that I can floor it, it will take off, REDLINE and stay there! I'll top out at 30-32mph. As soon as I let off the accelerator, it will shift and go into 2nd... etc. No other shifting problems. The truck runs fine. I've even towed 4,000 lbs like this (1500 miles), and it doesn't affect the truck at all. Just 1st gear. No slippage issues.

I had the tranny fluid replaced before it acted up (by dealer) , and the levels are ok. Then the problem (and the dealer "discussions").Just to be safe, I replaced the tranny fluid again (auto mechanic). It still has the same problem.

The Dodge dealer mechanics tell me that there is the possibility of a pressure issue... that's as far as we got.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Greg

I'm no expert, but it sounds like a problem with the valve body. I'd start with a quick Internet search on Dodge Ram automatic transmisssion valve body rebuild kits so that I am armed with knowledge about what is a reasonable cost. I'd then go to my local reputable transmission shop and inquire about a rebuild.

Good luck.
