Default 12 Valve killer pin

Just want to say ive read some good stuff on this forum. My father has a 98 12 valve and had the killer pin get him. The dowel pin didnt blow his motor, but the front case on the motor cracked. He took it all apart to replace the case, then being the way he is decided that he wasnt sure how to pull off the camshaft gear, so he wanted to take it somewhere so he put it back together. Anyway he tried to seal the crack for now, but oh well. Here's the problem, when he started it it idle's ok but it spudders if you give it fuel, no codes or check engine lights. A hell of a lot of white smoke. This morning I tried to start it to pull it in my shop and it took forever, then I finally got it to idle and it stalled itself. My question is could this be in the fuel system? Im good with gas cars and trucks and it sounds to me as if its a no fuel condition. Is there anyway to check this?

thanks

Jack

sounds like the timeing is out. . .

edit: one more thing, over at TDR they have a rather long but informative discussion about the KDP, how to tap it and what to do if it falls out on you.
