Default MEET THE MAYFAIR TWINS, and I have a question.

Well guys, I guess I am about to betray a fellow DF'er. Ever have a buddy who tells you that you can NEVER date his sister? Well, Mayfair has 2 sisters. Kate & DupliKate, the MAYFAIR twins.

I for got my question...lol.

Ok, my buddy and I are having an argument about mechanics. Here's the deal. My Ram has a Detroit locker in the rear, the front does not has it's locker installed yet. Just the factory diff is all.

I consider myselfmoderately knowledgedon how most things work. A diesel pickup is pretty simple after 13 years of "bonding". I am one, with my Ram.....lol.

The situation is that the vehicle is in 4 wheel drive. Techincally, all four whells will drive if both the front have equal traction on both sides. IF....(and this is where the argument started), if the frontaxle has to "differentiate", the ONLY option is for one wheel to speed up.One wheelcannot spin slower than the other threee because the two drive shafts dictate ring and pinion speed be equal up front and in back. And for that single front wheel to spin slower, the other three would have to be spinning faster. It doesn't happen.

Ok, I thank ALL of you for your opinions. Thanks guys. See ya around.

The only wheels that will spin at different speeds are the 2 front ones.

One wheel will spin fast and the other will spin and equal amount slower than the input speed of the pinion. (i.e. If one wheel spins 6 mph faster than the input speed, the other wll spin 6 mph slower) This will happen until one wheel is stopped and the other is going twice as fast as the input speed.

Both d-shafts are providing equal tq to both pinion shafts. But once you introduce a split (i.e. differential) it has a place to split the power at. The d-shafts will still rotate at the same speed.

Man with woman like that you would have enough raw material to keep you in Bio Diesel for months!

cumming along is correct. the locker on the other hand can work 2 different ways.
if power is applied to the pinion than both wheels will have to spin the same speed causing one wheel to chirp.
if no power is applied to the pinion then the locker acts as a open diff and allows the one wheel to spin faster
