Default Used cummins shopping.......

I'm going to look at a 01 2500 ext cab 4wd w/ 24v cummins and 5 spd. It has the full banks power pack system and 2" skyjacker. Owner admits the clutch won't handle the full brunt of the banks system. Duh, stock clutch. I figure about a grand for a good clutch. Anything else I should look for? He has a fuel pressure gauge but it's not installed. I would be doing this first as the truck still has the original lift pump (125k miles).
I'm pretty sure I'll pick up the truck barring no major issues. Then the wife inherits the '03 hemi and I get the cummins I wanted all along. Thanks for any input you guys have to offer.

Like you said, the lift pump is original and the injection pump is the VP44, so if you can, get the pressure checked at both of those. As long as you are still getting good pressure you'd be okay. But if either is getting on the low side, you might be in for a bit of a repair cost.

That injection pump, again if it goes out, would be between $900 for a rebuild and up to $1800 for a new one from the dealer.

It would be cheap insurance to get the pressure checked befor buying.

Otherwise go for it. That engine i sjsut getting broken in.

The lift pump situation should be thoroughly checked out,
as the prices of both pumps (inj & lift)
which can fail if the lift pressure is too low
will certainly be an unpleasant shock ($1000+)

It is suspicious that he has a lift pressure gauge and does not have it installed.

He said there is a fitting to check it with a gauge. What should the pressure be?

Pump pressure should be around 18 psi. Try this, crank but don't start the engine, leave the switch in the run position then open the water drain located on the fuel filter housing. You should get a good solid stream of fuel .

or go ahead and get it, then yank out the stock pump and install a FASS system. you'll never have to worry about it again.

also, if your gunna upgraded the clutch, check out south bend clutch, they have specialized culutches just for our trucks than can handle anything. . .including 800+hp.
