Fuel Milage Sucks!
I just bought an 07 crew cab dually 2X4 and the fuel is really bad. im getting around 11. It that normal? i have been driving Fords most of my life and Dodge had a better buy this year. i had a 02 ford crew cab long box and was getting 19 mpg with the Hyperteck program. I guess the question here is What are my options ( programers ) and if this is normal for this ride? I cant stand this kinda fuel milage. i live on a ranch and put sereral miles on a truck a year. Pull several trailers and cut and baile hay every year. to me i think i need some kinda program the can change from time to time. i know i will need a lil more hp when pulling. Just wanting to know what the steps would be. its a shame that you spend 40k and then have to mod ify your truck, owell thats the fun of it any how.[:-]
I have a 04 3500CTD 2wd, and when it was new I only got 11 to 13mpg, Now I get 19 empty and 13 to 14 loaded. I also pull a 27 ft gooseneck Cattle trailer 6 to 7hundred miles a week. Give it time to break in and the mileage will improve. My truck is stock and gonna stay that way. I have not seen a mod yet that improves mpg's enough yet to justify the cost. As far as power goes Ive had Fords and Chevys, and the Dodge takes the cake every time with a trailer. As far as Im concerned pullin 26,000 gross wgt. Im stickin to the Dodge. I leave my truck in 6th gear loaded like this and drive 125 miles of hills home pretty regular and the cummins holds it steady at 70 or whatever speed I choose. That says alot.
ok well the truck has only 600 miles on it and was wondering. i like the power it has and was just wondering about the fuel milage. i havent yet pulled a trailer as of yet. i have to get the goose neck installed in the bed. i use railes because sometimes i pull a fifthwheel and i have both units here already . i live in Texas and am haveing a times findignt erails . i havent went to the trailer place yet will do that next week. I was hopeing for a better responce about teh fule milage but i understand. Thanks for your input.!~!
I'd give it at least 10k before being concerned about the mileage... I bought mine with 13.8k on it, mileage was16~17 on average (bone stock), now with 33's and a few mods (intake kit, ATS intake manifold, exhaust & TST box) I lost about 3~4 mpg due to the tires and currently can still get 17's on the hiway, 14~15 around town... if I had the stock tires on there, I'd be around 19~20 on the hiway & 16~17 in town (guessing of course based on the loss from the tires...)
one thing you might consider giving a shot is 16 oz of power service diesel and 16 oz of 2 stroke (you probably already know that having owned a diesel in the past...)
anyways, welcome to DF...

Steve,
IF his 07 is any thing like my 06 he may want to only start out with 8 oz of 2 cycle oil and 16 oz of PS = Power Service Diesel fuel additive or even stick with MMO and not the 2 cycle oil.
I've noticed that when used with a high grade fuel (45 centane and16 oz of PS and 2 cycle oil ) my mpg goes down some. In fact I've been talking to someone about this very problem in another diesel forum.

Youv'e got over 500 miles on her, time to tow something heavy. My truck started out getting about 14 on the highway. After the first week I hooked up my camper and towed it to the lake through the foothills of SC. Next week mileage went up. every weekend after that same thing, and every week after up went my mileage. You have to break her in to get the good mileage. The only mod on my truck has been the muffler replacement in my sig. I average 19 on the highway and lifetime average towing and all is 17.1, give it some time and work it hard, you won't be dissapointed.
