No it will not hurt the truck. The only thing different is the die. That is it. I run it allot. I get it from the rig from time to time. But as everyone else said. Do not get caught it is a big fine. The chances are low you will ever get checked. But if you do you will pay for it. Just tell them you have allot of MMO in your fuel.

My understanding is that offroad diesel has a higher sulfur content, as well as being non-taxed. The higher sulfur content actually helps with lubrication of your fuel system. The process by which the sulfur is removed in order to make street legal, low sulfur fuel takes much of the lubricating properties out of the fuel as well. That is why so many guys are running additives to add some lubrication back into the fuel. i know in Indiana it is up to $10k fine for running offroad diesel.

Is there a way to "un-dye" or to dye it back to it's original color?

That would be really cool huh?

bwrong,

No it will not hurt your fuel system if you use red fuel, as all they add to it is dye to ID non-taxed fuel.

cmnspwr,

Red fuel off road fuel to the best of my knowledge is mostly #2 diesel, but some time some places do carry it in #1.

bigmike,

Red dyed off road fuel can come in either LSD or ULSD, but aprox 80% of all red fuel is now ULSD it all depends if your located near a plant that still makes LSD that can be sold for off and on road use until 12/2010.

just a heads up for you guys running off road diesel, i was at the dealer a few weeks ago, and there was a big sign on the wall stating that any vehicles found to be using offroad diesel will not have their warranties upheld. not sure if they can legally do that or how they can find out if you ever used it (unless it was in your tank at the time), but just a heads up.

ThereARE ways to un-dye the red diesel and I believe Ks, Ok, CO and few other central states are $500 for first and like 10k for later.

Doesn't red and blue make purple? "Off Road diesel" is #1 diesel as opposed to the regular green #2 right? Is the only reason that "off road diesel" is illegal on public roads is because it is not taxed?
Kerosene is #1 diesel fuel. The nontaxed offroad and taxed diesel we run in our trucks is #2 diesel. The sulfer content of offroad and taxed fuel is the exact same. It all comes through the same pipelines from the same refineries the only difference being the color of the dye. And there has been some angst in the agricultural industry about what problems the ULSD is going to cause in older farm equipment because turnover in farm equipment is so slow and farmers generally run their tractors and such for many years before replacing. Which mean newer emissions compliant farm machinery is going to take many years to trickle into widespread use. While it is very rare for them to do roadside checks it is not unheard of. I've seen it happen on roadsides around where I live. They'll pull over ever big rig or diesel pcikup that passes and take a fuel sample. If you get caught running offroad fuel its a $10,000 fine plus they can also estimate how much of the offroad fuel they think you've been using and add even more to that. In other words they can pull a number out of the thin air and take you to the wringers. If there's one thing that'll get you in deep doo doo every time its messing around with the governemnet and trying to beat them out of revenue. Al Capone was a bootlegger but he went to jail for not paying taxes on his illegal loot! Run that offroad diesel at your own risk.
