Napoleon bonaparte, at five-foot-six, was just an inch shorter than Tom Cruise. But it’s been suggested his comparatively diminutive size made him strive extra hard to be taken seriously. (Unlike Cruise, for whom the leaping-on-Oprah’s-couch incident, along with Eyes Wide Shut, suggests he’ll be taken seriously about the time Pee Wee Herman is elected president of the Screen Actors Guild.)
Napoleon could have been happy with France and most of Europe, but no, he wanted Russia. Never satisfied.
Had he been born 236 years later, Napoleon would have been a good candidate for the Macedo Motorsports upgrade for the Dodge Ram SRT10, designed for people who always want more. Five hundred horsepower? Yes, that’s a nice place to start, but what else have you got?
Larry Macedo worked for Hennessey Performance Engineering in Houston, then tuned Dodge Vipers at Justin Bell’s driving school in Florida. A few years ago he and his wife opened Macedo Motorsports in a nondescript building in the warehouse district of Orlando. Just off Orange Blossom Trail, go past the third prostitute and turn right.
Outside Macedo the sound you are most likely to hear is that of engines under duress. The chassis dyno is right by the front wall. Actually, they are looking for a new dyno, as this one is good up to only 1200 hp. Napoleon would take that as a good sign.
Vipers dominate inside, but there is a smattering of Chevrolet Camaros—one getting a rear-mounted turbocharger—and a Ford SVT Lightning. Outside there’s a Ram SRT10 with a new Paxton supercharger, the Novi-2000 specifically, a gear-driven blower with a polished aluminum finish that looks almost factory. It’s similar to a Viper supercharger. Paxton claims a 171-hp gain for the SRT10.
Behind the wheel it’s a little hard to tell what the blower does for the truck, since as stock there are already 500 hp and 525 lb-ft. My buttocks aren’t properly calibrated to tell the difference between 525 lb-ft and the claimed 627 lb-ft, but the dyno is, and apparently those claims are in the ballpark.
On the road you hear the familiar supercharger whine, and the needle on the gas gauge drops so quickly it’s almost amusing (actually it is amusing, since this isn’t our truck); otherwise the best you can tell is that this used to be a very fast truck, and now it’s even faster. The mods are invisible from the outside, and assuming your drag partner can’t hear the supercharger, he’s in for a whuppin’.
Unless he has also been to Macedo Motorsports, where there’s still more stuff available for your SRT10. Marketing director Joe Lafko priced some of it out for us: Take your new SRT10 ($46,625 with shipping, and no, it isn’t an employee discount offer), add supercharger ($8,399 with installation), a three-inch cat-back exhaust ($650), tubular headers ($1,795), a fuel system upgrade ($3,000), a lowering kit ($950) and stand-alone computer upgrade ($3,000) and you’ve got what we’d call your “Napoleon” package.
Add nitrous oxide and a propane injection system, and you get the ultimate “Napoleon at Waterloo” edition.
