mech listened to engine and says its a rod..4000 to rebuild(high right)..is it possible for the oil pump to sound like a rod knock?? sounds likechatter is coming fromunder the intake in the center of the engine..cant really tell for sure...oil pressure drops to zero after its driven and then stop at a light or stop sign.worse when a/c is on..it doesnt chatter until its warm...also is it possible to just replace the bearings and camshaft without a total rebuild and save a couple grand..?... thanks a bunch

 

It can be done by replacing the bad rod, getting a crankshaft kit, and a full engine gasket set. The CS kit comes with the crank and all of the main and rod bearings for about $125, then about another $150 for the one rod and the gasket set. Figure in oil, a filter and any incidentals and you're looking at about $300 in parts for the whole repair. If you can do it yourself great, if not, then you're looking at labor too. Quoted 4K huh? I'd sure like to make $3,700 for two days work.

 

you still would have machining to do for the bearing journals though... $3700 is a rip off, you can get a wrecking yard motor to drop in for about $1500 bux, motor & labor included.
