Default Trans troubles

Hello again.
This forum helped us with my son's pickup.
Now I need help.
My 99 3500 van w/ a 4 spd auto trans. 110,000 miles on it.
When I tow my trailer for a while (10 miles or so) and come to a stop, the trans will act like I'm starting out in second or third gear.
It doesn't do it all the time just once in a while.
First time it happened a couple of years ago I was on the turnpike towing a 2000 lb. trailer. I had the cruise control engaged and I thought that was the problem. Now I no longer use the cruise while towing.
It doesn't matter whether I'm in OD or not.
Friend of mine suggested an electrical problem.
It never acts up if I'm not towing.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
David

Does the trailer have electric brakes? If so, perhaps the brake controller isn't releasing the brakes right away when you take your foot off the pedal. This could be causing the feeling of no power.

Alloro,
thanks for the reply.
trailer has electric brakes and they seem to be functioning properly.

david

p.s.
when it happened a couple years ago...that trailer did not have brakes on it.

Then you're probably looking at an overheating trannyissue.

You might be having an issue with the pressure control solenoid or transducer. If the solenoid or sensor gets debris in it then it gives a faulty reading to the pcm or just can't control the pressure if it is the solenoid. Also, you should always turn the O/D off when towing.

Thanks for the replies and i'm sorry i didn't get back sooner.
I towed my trailer, with the OD off, and everything was fine.
about 125 miles.
When it happened before, i was using the OD.

thanks again. this forum is great.
