Smoke or steam? If your heater core sprung a leak you will get steam coming out of your vents. Are you losing coolant?

You'll need to replace the heater core. You can bypass the HC temporarily while you're ordering it, by pulling the two hoses off and connecting them together with a piece of 3/4" pipe. But no HC=no heat come winter, so don't put it off too long.

Under 100 bucks yourself, over 300 buck for a shop, chose your poison. It's a more difficult and expensive job if you have A/C because the refrigerant lines have to be disconnected to do it. Try calling a couple of shops in your area and get some quotes. The prices could be different for your area than mine.
